Install Microsoft Adpcm Audio Codec
I got a couple of AVI files which seem to be encoded using Divx5 and I can't get the audio to play. I know it must be missing codec. I'm using MS Media Player 9 under WinXP and when I load the files, it tries to download a missing codec but fails to do so. At first, I didn't have the video either, so I downloaded Divx5 bundle and installed it.
Now I get the video, but no audio. I installed ACE Mega CodecS Pack. It partially solved the problem: I had audio, but the video was shaky, even MPEGs or older AVI movie files which used to play perfectly. So I was now able to get the the audio, but the video output was awful. I know I have a pretty slow computer, but why files the used to play well were now all shaky? So I uninstalled ACE Mega CodecS Pack and tried Nimo Pack instead. The same shakiness occured.
Installing the AC3 codec doesn't solve the problem either. Here are data provided by codec identifying softwares for 2 files I have problem with: GSPOT -------------------------------------------------------------------------- For File1: VIDEO FORMAT CODEC 4CC: DX50/DIVX Name: DivX 5.0 Codec is installed Details: Gspot has found Divx decoder filter, which is installed on your system, is a 'primary' match, and based on that, the video for this file should play fine. Nonetheless, DirectShow is apparently NOT able to play this file (see 'DirectShow Render', below). No further informatio is available concerning the apparent discrepancy AUDIO FORMAT CODEC Name: adpcm (0x0002) Microsoft Corporation Codec not installed Details: Format tag: 0x0002 Format tag name: WAVE_FORMAT_ADPCM Format vendor: Microsoft Corporation Gspot was not able to find an audio codec which will decompress this format. DirectShow was not able to render it either. You will most likely need to get an audio codec update to get sound from this media clip. For File2: VIDEO FORMAT CODEC Same info as above.
I have this problem with all.wav files with ADPCM codec. I used gspot to findout which codec they had and they did have ADPCM init. I had installed codecs, removed some, someone I think one of them actually deleted the AUDIO CODEC ADPCM from my vista. Select one of the codecs needed such as Microsoft IMA ADPCM Audio Codec, and click on Next to reinstall the codec (on install the new codec is not yet be installed). MCI drivers are not needed as these are legacy drivers for Windows 95/98/Me.

It seem the MS ADPCM codec is supposed to be provided with VFW. To my understanding, I should have it installed by default.
I've searched using Google to find info about how to install the ADPCM codec but all I could find was conserning Win9x. Nothing can be found for WinXP. Even Microsoft's Knoledge Base has nothing about ADPCM for WinXP. Could anyone advise me on this?
